Zinc isotope anomalies in primitive meteorites identify the outer solar system as an important source of Earth's volatile inventory

چکیده

The source of and timing delivery the volatile elements to Earth is a question that fundamental understanding how our planet evolved. Here, we show primitive meteorites have resolved mass-independent Zn isotope anomalies from terrestrial reservoir. Carbonaceous chondrites (CC), likely originating outer Solar System are distinct non-CC, intermediate between these two components. Modelling based on data indicates around 30% Earth's budget other moderately material derives participation 6% CC-like materials during accretion, with remaining coming NC meteorites. This implies that, despite relatively minor mass thought derive material, CC component was significantly volatile-enriched; this in line observation elemental abundance pattern could be explained by carbonaceous source, chondrite-like isotopic more volatile-rich accreted later accretion history (e.g. Hg, Se, N, noble gases).

The outer solar system

The outer solar system extends beyond a heliocentric distance of 5AU. It contains the giant planets and their systems (rings and satellites), the Kuiper belt, the comets (except those which approach episodically the inner solar system) and, at its outer edge, the Oort cloud. The outer solar system physically corresponds to the region located outside the « snow line » which corresponded to the d...

Meteorites: messengers from the early solar system.

Meteorites are fragments from solar system bodies, dominantly asteroids. A small fraction is derived from the Moon and from Mars. These rocks tell a rich history of the early solar system and range from solids little changed since the earliest phases of solid matter condensation in the solar nebula (chondrites) to material representing asteroidal metamorphism and melting, impact processes on th...

Isotope Anomalies in the Fe-group Elements in Meteorites and Connections to Nucleosynthesis in AGB Stars

We study the effects of neutron captures in AGB stars on “Fe-group” elements, with an emphasis on Cr, Fe, and Ni. These elements show anomalies in Cr, Fe, and Ni in solar-system materials, which are commonly attributed to SNe. However, as large fractions of the interstellar medium (ISM) were reprocessed in AGB stars, these elements were reprocessed, too. We calculate the effects of such reproce...
